Reading Reflection No. 1

What surprised me the most?

What surprised me the most was that Chanel had an addiction to morphine that came to be when she was dealing with her ‘tragic past’.

What about the entrepreneur did you most admire?

That Coco Chanel came from nothing and made something of herself.

What about the entrepreneur did you least admire?

That for someone so successful to still battle with demons. I felt like if she created that empire she should’ve battled her drug addiction with the same spirit. This is me being insensitive.

Did the entrepreneur encounter adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it?

They did. She grew up poor with odds against her. She knew that men were critical to her career advancement and so she used her beauty to woo wealthy men and those men helped her pursue her career in fashion.

Coco Chanel was extremely ambitious and aware of surroundings. She was able to exploit her strengths to become successful. One part of the reading that was confusing to me was the history behind the story. I was left confused at times due to this because I did not know much about the time during Coco Chanel’s life. If I was able to ask two questions I would ask: How did you battle with issues of self-confidence in a world run by men? & For someone so ambitious how did you know that you needed a male figure and monetary funding to succeed? I would ask these questions because I constantly battle with self-confidence and I feel that she grew up in a time when women were not valued and so that she definitely struggled with that.

I think her opinion of hard work was that hard work for her was a normality. She knew that if she wasn’t working the hardest then she wouldn’t be successful.  Additionally, I feel like she also felt like even at full speed ahead she still felt like she wasn’t working hard enough.

  1. Hi Emily,
I really enjoyed reading though your assignment and learning more about Chanel. I discovered things that I did not know about her such as her morphine addiction, she grew up poor and came from nothing, and how she used men to gain success. I agree with your statement about how she always worked hard to become successful because her fashion brand is still extremely successful to this day and it wouldn’t be this popular if it wasn’t for her hard work.

  2. HI Emily,
It was great getting to read another summary of a book. It sounds very inspirational the life that Chanel went through in that she came from rags to riches. Back then, men had so many more rights than women so it was very difficult to be successful as a women. Chanel is one of the best fashion brands in the world that so many people would love to add to their wardrobe but the prices are pretty high. I think your post was great and highly in depth and analyzed properly.
